Create to Articulate

Artist’s statement:

Despite my love for talking, I believe that sometimes a conversation alone cannot fully articulate the complexity that an image and its many interpretations may bring. I feel that the arts allow me as a person to voice the many ideas and abstractions I carry within my mind as an individual. The symbolism in the distinctive acts of color choice, composition, choice of subject, choice of medium, all intertwine into a piece that represents a complex and multifaceted idea that is difficult to articulate in speech. I sometimes forget to include things in my conversations with people and I often find myself smacking myself on the forehead because I forgot something crucial. Art is something much more forgiving and less instantaneous. You can always go back and rework a piece of art whether it's repainting a section, rewriting a paragraph, or adding new ideas, art will always accept your changes at any time. It is a forgiving and generous medium that allows me to continue my thought process and further explore its complexities. I don’t have to feel bad about forgetting something in a conversation, worrying about not expressing myself properly, or mis-articulating myself because I can go back and fix it. Ignorance is not the lack of knowledge, but refusing the choice to expand upon your knowledge, and that's what motivates me to create. The process of creating art allows for a deeper analysis and reanalysis of knowledge and its relationship to me and my perception of said knowledge.

WHY I CHOSE MY SELECTIONS:

I decided upon these works for my portfolio because I believe that they best encompass beliefs and ideologies that are important to myself and help create my identity as a person. The series of wooden panels, for example, work to intertwine my love of history, my culture, my pacifism, and my feminist principles and criticisms that develop the foundation of my identity as a person. The self portrait of myself is my advocacy towards an epidemic hitting our youth hard and a redirection of negative addictions into positive ones. My painting of a pudu, a species of deer, is meant to commentate on the nature of education and the flaws I’ve seen thus far in my own journey. My painting of the furin, or glass wind chimes, are meant to display how despite how attractive some things may appear, sometimes what we really need and must find is hidden and takes time to discover on your own. Finally, my painting of the dogs represents the way my mind understands and visualizes the emotions of others as well as myself. Opinions are perceptions of the world and my perception of the world is what encapsulates my portfolio and my choice in pieces. This portfolio is meant to demonstrate and illustrate my advocacy for what I believe is important and how my perceptions of the world have thus formed me as a person and my relation to others and art.
